How should we help someone close to us that is obese?
I remember when I first started to lose weight, I knew that I was overweight and that I needed to lose around 15 kilos but I just couldn’t find the motivation to avoid the bad stuff. Here at TDF we know that the most important thing is taking in fewer calories than you use and it’s really as simple as that. Achieving it is tricky though and with a variety of inbuilt excuses of stress or lack of time, it’s all too easy to head for the processed food. I knew the way I was eating was wrong and essentially locking me into a vicious circle of fatness and depression.
There was one thing that forced me to change and it was as simple as my much loved wife finally agreeing that I was fat. For a couple of years she’d been the dutiful wife and answered my queries as to whether I was fat or not with ‘Oh no, you’re beautiful’ Now, that did always make me feel better for a fleeting moment but fleeting would be all it was as underneath, I already knew the answer. I was fat and I needed to lose weight so pretty soon the depression would set back in. Having her finally just agree that I was indeed fat, not harshly but caringly, made me really see myself as the world did.
It may be harsh but honesty may well be the best policy.
